• Oba of Benin(Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II) and Governor of Lagos State (Babajide Sanwo-Olu)

By Rose Peter Graham

"The Benins are the true indigenes of Lagos state," Oba of Benin said recently during his visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State; as he addressed his host and the audience.

The Oba's statement, even though controversial drew a thunderous applauds from his entourage then accompanied by the famous great historical salutation: "Oba ghato kpere ...Ise!

Translation: " Long Live the King". An impressive and intimidating gesture from the Benins, you would say.

I must point out here that many have wondered the essence of this vital visit. While some believe that this special visit is more than meets the eye, others are of the opinion that the reasons would be revealed if not now, definitely in the nearest future.

Come to think of it, how many times have you heard or seen a great Oba, like that of the Benin Kingdom, leave his exalted seat/Palace to pay a visit?

Did I hear you say this are modern times and culture should move with it? Well, what can I say but conclude that there must have been a cogent reason to warrant such action?

Another question that begs an answer is- Why did the Oba of Benin pay a visit to the Governor of Lagos State?

Well, no explanation has been given yet and no matter what the reason is, the interesting thing about all of these is that the age long debate around the historical dominance between the Yorubas and the Benins continues...
