Russia Pledges Support for Iran's Nuclear Programme Amid Global Concerns

Russia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Iran in addressing challenges related to its nuclear programme. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov disclosed this during an interview with the Iranian news agency IRNA on Tuesday.

Peskov highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between Moscow and Tehran, emphasizing Russia's readiness to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, including nuclear development.

Strengthening Diplomatic Collaboration

"Iran support includes providing assistance in dealing with important matters like the nuclear programme," Peskov stated. He further underscored that diplomatic engagement remains the preferred approach to resolving international concerns about Iran's nuclear activities.

According to Peskov, achieving meaningful progress in this area requires genuine political will from all involved parties.

The 2015 Nuclear Deal and Its Challenges

Iran's nuclear activities have been a focal point of international diplomacy since the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The agreement, signed by Iran and the P5+1 nations—United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France—offered sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on Iran's nuclear programme.

However, the deal faced a significant setback in 2018 when then-U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement and reimposed economic sanctions on Tehran.

Iran's Response and Future Prospects

In retaliation to the sanctions, Iran gradually scaled back its nuclear commitments, resuming uranium enrichment beyond the agreed limits.

With Russia's renewed pledge of support, experts are closely watching how this collaboration might influence ongoing diplomatic efforts to revive the nuclear deal and address lingering global concerns.

As the situation unfolds, international stakeholders continue to advocate for peaceful negotiations and compliance with non-proliferation standards.
