US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday night, February 27, that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine for a potential peace deal are progressing significantly, commending Russia for its conduct during the discussions.
Trump's remarks came during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House. Starmer urged the United States to provide security support for any European forces that may take on a peacekeeping role in Ukraine following the conclusion of the talks, which Trump has actively pursued since assuming office last month.
While sitting alongside Starmer in the Oval Office, Trump expressed confidence that a peace agreement with Russia would be successful and expressed skepticism about any further invasion of Ukraine by Putin.
He refrained from divulging specific details about peacekeeping arrangements until a deal is finalized. "I think Russia has been acting very well. … I think we’re very well advanced on the deal, but we have not made a deal yet,” Trump commented.
