The recently unveiled nomination list for the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) has set social media abuzz, with many questioning the absence of celebrated actress and box office record-holder, Funke Akindele.
Released on Sunday, March 23, the nomination list spotlighted several acclaimed productions, including Seven Doors by Femi Adebayo and Lisabi by Lateef Adedimeji, both earning multiple nods. However, Funke Akindele was noticeably missing from the individual nominee categories, despite House of Gaa—a project she was involved in—securing a nomination. Furthermore, her 2024 blockbuster, Everybody Loves Jenifa, did not receive any recognition.
This isn’t the first time her AMVCA recognition, or lack thereof, has sparked debate. At the 10th edition of the prestigious awards, fans were disappointed when her record-breaking film, A Tribe Called Judah, failed to secure a win, despite multiple nominations in categories such as Best Lead Actress, Best Movie, and Best Supporting Actor.
Despite the ongoing discourse, Funke Akindele remains one of the most decorated figures in AMVCA history. She holds the record for the highest number of nominations as an actress and filmmaker, boasting six wins, including multiple Best Actress in a Comedy awards (2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022), as well as Best Actress in a Drama and Best Director.
The buzz surrounding her AMVCA absence has triggered mixed reactions from fans, with some speculating she did not submit her films for consideration, while others believe she was overlooked.
