Just a week after a major explosion on the Trans-Niger pipeline in Bodo, another explosion has occurred at the Soku oil facility in Akuku Toru Local Government Area, Rivers State. The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) confirmed the incident, reporting fireballs visible in the sky. The cause of the explosion remains unknown, prompting calls for an investigation from the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).
This marks the third explosion in Rivers State within a week, following incidents in Ogoni and Oga/Egbama/Ndoni. President Bola Tinubu previously declared a six-month state of emergency due to escalating violence in the region.
Heightened tensions continue as reports suggest militant leaders are regrouping to plan collective attacks on oil facilities. Commander Bibi Oduku of Riverine Security emphasized the need for vigilance and cooperation with military forces to prevent illegal activities linked to these threats.
Meanwhile, suspended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara made a public appearance at a prayer service in Port Harcourt, just five days after the emergency declaration. His presence raises questions about the political climate amid ongoing unrest in the Niger Delta.
