US President Donald Trump has announced the immediate revocation of Secret Service protection for former president Joe Biden’s adult children. This decision comes following reports that Hunter Biden is vacationing in South Africa – a situation that has drawn Trump’s attention.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Hunter Biden has had Secret Service protection for an extended period of time, all paid for by the United States taxpayer.” He continued, “Please be advised that, effective immediately, Hunter Biden will no longer receive Secret Service protection. Likewise, Ashley Biden, who is currently assigned 13 agents, will also be removed from the list.”
As of now, there has been no official response from Joe Biden’s office regarding Trump’s announcement.
Under federal law, former presidents and their spouses are granted lifelong Secret Service protection. However, the protection for their children over the age of 16 typically ends once they leave office. Both Biden and Trump had chosen to extend this protection option for six months before their respective departures.
During a recent visit to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Trump was questioned about his decision to revoke protection for the former president's son. He remarked, “Well, we have done that with many. I would say if there are 18 with Hunter Biden, that will be something I’ll look at this afternoon.” Notably, this was the first time he had been made aware of the situation.
This action isn’t unprecedented for Trump, who made headlines in January by revoking security details for several former officials, including Mike Pompeo and John Bolton, shortly after beginning his second term. Despite concerns raised by the Biden administration about the ongoing threats faced by those individuals due to their actions during Trump’s presidency, the decision to remove their security details proceeded.
As this story develops, it remains to be seen how Biden's administration will respond to this significant action amid an already contentious political environment.
