Senate President Godswill Akpabio has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, requesting a thorough investigation and legal action over what he describes as “malicious” and “defamatory” allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
This development follows a formal complaint filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan, in which she accused Akpabio of orchestrating a plot to assassinate her, allegedly directing former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to carry out the act in Kogi State.
In response, Akpabio strongly denied the claims, describing them as “reckless falsehoods” intended to tarnish his image and provoke political tension. He has called for Akpoti-Uduaghan to be investigated and prosecuted for criminal defamation.
In his petition to the police, Akpabio wrote:
“I write to formally bring to your attention and seek immediate investigation and prosecution of a criminally defamatory and malicious statement made against me by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a suspended member of the Nigerian Senate, on the 1st of April, 2025. These statements were widely publicized across radio stations, television, newspapers, and social media.”
He continued:
“In her public address in Kogi State, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan falsely alleged that I instructed the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to ‘assassinate her in Kogi State instead of Abuja’—in a manner that would implicate her constituents.”
Akpabio further described the allegation as:
“A reckless and deliberate attempt to damage my reputation, endanger my life and security, and incite political unrest.”
He also emphasized the potential political motivations behind the accusation:
“Her motive was clear—to incite the public, manipulate sentiments, and malign my person and office in the eyes of the Nigerian people and the international community.”
The matter has since stirred intense reactions across political and public circles, with many awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.
