The Ondo State Police Command has refuted reports alleging that a vehicle in the convoy of First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was involved in the tragic death of a young girl in Akure on Thursday.
Senator Tinubu was in the state to launch the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribute 10,000 professional kits — including scrubs and Crocs — to midwives across the South-West.
In a statement issued by the Command's spokesperson, DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the police described the claims — originally published by Sahara Reporters — as “false and misleading.”
“The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to a false report alleging that the First Lady’s convoy was responsible for the death of a young girl,” the statement read.
“Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations confirmed that the incident was a result of a hit-and-run by an unregistered white Lexus vehicle — not by any car connected to the First Lady’s convoy.”
According to the police, a witness who saw the crash pursued the fleeing vehicle on a motorcycle, helping to confirm the identity of the car involved. Multiple witnesses and the victim’s parents also corroborated this version of events.
The statement also corrected an error in the original report, which stated that the victim was nine years old. “According to her parents, the child was actually seven years old,” the spokesperson said, pointing to “a lack of journalistic due diligence” in the publication.
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police has since visited the grieving family and assured them of a full and transparent investigation.
“At no point was the First Lady’s convoy involved in this incident,” the police reiterated.
