A previously unseen portrait of former U.S. President Donald Trump personally gifted by Russian President Vladimir Putin has finally been revealed.
The oil painting, delivered to Trump in March by envoy Steve Witkoff, was described at the time as a “beautiful portrait” by a top Russian artist. Until now, however, the artwork remained hidden from public view.
In an exclusive with CNN, renowned Russian painter Nikas Safronov unveiled the dramatic image, commissioned by the Kremlin. The portrait captures Trump at his July 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, moments after surviving an assassination attempt bloodied, yet raising his fist defiantly.
I wanted to capture the blood, the scar, and his bravery, Safronov said. “He didn’t retreat. He raised his arm to show unity with America and a promise to restore its greatness.
Safronov, whose previous subjects include Pope Francis, Kim Jong Un, and Narendra Modi, said he was first approached by anonymous individuals he later believed were Kremlin representatives. Realizing the painting’s diplomatic purpose, he chose to forgo payment.
Putin later confirmed the gift was a symbolic gesture aimed at rebuilding strained U.S.–Russia relations.
The portrait now reportedly hangs in the Grand Foyer of the White House, replacing the official portrait of former President Barack Obama.
