An Upper Area Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has granted controversial singer Portable bail in the sum of ₦1 million.
Portable was arraigned on Monday, April 14, on charges including criminal defamation, intimidation, inciting public disturbance, and cyberstalking. His arrest followed a petition filed by fellow artist Okunola Saheed, popularly known as Osupa, who accused Portable of defamation of character and issuing threats to his life.
According to the petition, Portable allegedly made several livestream videos targeting Osupa, during which he claimed the veteran singer removed his songs from Apple Music and Spotify allegations that Osupa said damaged his reputation.
During the hearing, police prosecutor Abubakar Issa urged the court to remand Portable in a correctional facility pending the conclusion of the investigation.
However, Portable’s legal counsel, Barrister Adebayo Isaac, countered the motion, arguing that detaining the singer was unnecessary since the police had already granted him administrative bail the previous day. He emphasized that Portable is a public figure with a verifiable address and would not evade trial if granted bail.
Citing Sections 165 and 172(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Adebayo appealed to the court to consider the legal basis for granting bail.
In his ruling, the presiding judge, Hon. Sunday Adeniyi, granted Portable bail in the sum of ₦1 million with two sureties one of whom must be a chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).
The case was adjourned to April 30, 2025, for further hearing.
