President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria today after nearly two weeks abroad, according to the Presidency.

The confirmation came on Monday through Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who shared the update via his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will return home today,” Onanuga wrote in a brief post.

President Tinubu departed Nigeria for Paris on April 2, 2025, for what the Presidency described as a working visit, focused on reviewing his administration’s mid-term performance and evaluating key milestones.

However, his prolonged absence has sparked criticism amid growing insecurity and escalating violence in parts of the country, especially in Plateau and Benue states.

Prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have openly criticized the President’s continued stay abroad. In a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku called Tinubu’s absence “irresponsible,” especially during a time of national crisis.

“Tinubu is away while Nigeria burns daily killings, attacks, and loss of territories. This is deeply troubling,” Atiku said. “Nigerians are yearning for real leadership someone who’s present and actively engaged.”

Echoing these sentiments, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, urged the President to return home immediately.

“In the two weeks you have been away, over 150 Nigerians have lost their lives to insecurity,” Obi said, referencing deadly attacks in Plateau, Zamfara, Borno, and Benue states. “I urge Mr President to quickly suspend whatever he is doing in France and rush home to take responsibility by addressing these disturbing issues.”

The Presidency has not issued further details regarding the President’s arrival time or schedule upon return.
