Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, April 11, Ndume emphasized that while Buhari may no longer hold political office, he continues to command significant influence, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
“Buhari’s followership has naturally declined, as expected after leaving office,” Ndume said. “But you still can’t write him off, especially with the Northern masses. His support base has always been deep, almost occultic. If Buhari were to appear here now, everyone, including traders in the vegetable market, would rush to see him. He is still with the Talakawas [masses].”
The senator’s comments came in response to the recent high-profile visit to Buhari’s Kaduna residence by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures, a meeting that has sparked political speculation.
Ndume continued, “Tinubu should be worried if Buhari is not on his side. Every vote counts and Buhari has one vote. Tinubu should also be worried about my position, because I, too, have one vote. He doesn’t have a vote for me; I have a vote for him.”
