Outspoken social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has followed through on his promise to support veteran musician Eedris Abdulkareem by funding a new music video for the controversial protest track Tell Your Papa.

The original video for the politically charged song was recently banned by Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), which labeled it “inappropriate and disrespectful.” The decision sparked widespread debate, with many accusing the government of censorship. Ironically, the ban only intensified interest online, propelling the song across social media platforms.

In response to the NBC’s action, VDM publicly condemned the ban, stating that Abdulkareem was simply “speaking the truth” through his lyrics. He pledged to produce a new version of the video as an act of defiance and solidarity.

“Dear Eedris Abdulkareem, we’re going to produce a new version of the video, and this time, we’re footing the bill,” VDM declared. “I’ll even appear in it. Since we can’t get the President himself, we’ll find a lookalike for Tinubu. We’re calling it Tell Your Papa 2, and we’ll spotlight even more issues.”

True to his word, on Monday, April 14, VDM shared a screenshot of a payment receipt made to filmmaker Shalom Chiki Uyi, confirming that production for the new video is officially underway. The payment was labeled Eedris Abdulkareem Tell Your Papa remake.

“It’s happening,” VDM announced, adding that the remake will be shot by shalomchikifilms, with Seyi as the director.

Social media reactions have been mixed, with many praising VDM’s bold move, while others advised caution given Nigeria’s current political climate.

See some reactions below:

@chinexo28: “Eedris Abdulkareem should be careful with VDM. That guy is a snake—he likes bringing people down to elevate himself. And again, he should be careful. Tinubu is not Obasanjo. Nigeria today is not the same. No rules anymore—if they arrest him now, it’s over.”

@KUN05__: “If we had more people like VDM and Eedris Abdulkareem, Nigeria would rise again. With this kind of leadership, we need brave voices.”

@eemmanuels4: “No one is holding them accountable. VDM is doing well, but he avoids criticizing the government.”
