A video capturing a subtle but significant moment between two of Nigeria’s most esteemed traditional rulers the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II has gone viral, fueling heated discussions across social media.

The incident occurred during an event hosted by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in Ibadan, Oyo State, on April 29, 2025. As the Ooni of Ife arrived, other monarchs in attendance rose to greet him with handshakes. However, the Alaafin notably remained seated, creating a visible contrast that did not go unnoticed.

Despite the apparent breach of protocol, the Ooni maintained composure, approached the Alaafin, offered a handshake, and engaged in a brief exchange before taking his seat an ornate, cushioned chair distinctly different from the plastic seats provided for many of the other royal attendees, including the Alaafin.

The moment has triggered widespread commentary online. Some observers argue that the Ooni of Ife, widely regarded as the spiritual head of the Yoruba people, deserved the gesture of respect. Others contend that the Alaafin’s posture may reflect ongoing tensions or a different interpretation of traditional hierarchy and protocol.

The video continues to trend, with many Nigerians weighing in on the deeper cultural, historical, and political undertones of the encounter.
