Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili made history at the Adidas Atlanta City Games on Saturday, setting a new women’s world record in the 150m event with a stunning time of 15.85 seconds nearly four seconds faster than the previous mark.
The 22-year-old athlete, born in Port Harcourt, delivered a dominant performance that left spectators and fellow athletes in awe. Her record-breaking run shattered the seven-year-old benchmark set by Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018, making Ofili the first woman ever to complete the 150m in under 16 seconds.
Ofili surged ahead after the 50m mark and maintained her lead with remarkable ease, widening the gap significantly between herself and her competitors. American sprinter Tamari Davis finished second with a personal best, but still lagged considerably behind Ofili’s pace.
"The Lord is good and is marvellous in my sight. Honestly, I’m surprised with the time," Ofili said in a post-race interview. "But I know I put in the work, I trust my coach, I trust his program, and I knew the Lord would make it happen at the right time."
Reflecting on her strategy, she revealed that her coach encouraged her to approach the race with a relaxed mindset. "I was told to relax and treat the race like it’s 100 metres," she added.
This historic feat adds to Ofili’s growing list of accolades. In 2023, she set a new African record in the 200m with a time of 22.36 seconds at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Her performance in Atlanta not only cements her status as one of Africa’s fastest women but also marks her as a formidable force on the global athletics stage.
