The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Roman Catholic Church on the election of Pope Leo XIV.

In a statement issued on Friday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described the election as a significant milestone that brings joy to Catholics around the world. He said CAN stands in solidarity with the global Catholic community in celebrating this historic occasion.

“The emergence of Pope Leo XIV signifies renewal and hope for the Catholic Church,” Archbishop Okoh stated. “CAN is confident that the new Pontiff will advance peace, justice, and inclusiveness, building on the legacy of his predecessors.”

He added, “We pray that Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate will be blessed with wisdom, good health, and strength to lead God’s people in the path of righteousness. May God guide and sustain him in his ministry.”

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States was elected as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

The announcement was made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where Cardinal Dominique Mamberti proclaimed the traditional “Habemus Papam” to thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

At 69, Pope Leo XIV becomes the first American to assume the papacy. He previously served as the Superior General of the Augustinian order and has a long record of pastoral and missionary work, particularly in Latin America.

He succeeds Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff and the first from Latin America, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
