Canadian rapper Drake has publicly called on California Governor Gavin Newsom to pardon fellow artist Tory Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for the 2020 shooting of rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Taking to Instagram, Drake shared a link to a Change.org petition titled “Correct a Deep Injustice” along with the caption, "@torylanez come home soon." The petition, which has surpassed 250,000 signatures, argues that Lanez’s 2023 conviction was based on insufficient physical evidence and alleges that the justice system unfairly targeted him. It also urges Governor Newsom to eliminate what it describes as “politically motivated sentencing enhancements.”

Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was convicted of firing a gun that injured Megan Thee Stallion in the foot after an argument in a vehicle following a Hollywood Hills party. Despite his claims of innocence, a jury found him guilty on multiple felony counts, including assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

The renewed push for clemency follows reports that Lanez was recently stabbed 14 times by another inmate. According to sources familiar with the incident, he received treatment at a medical facility in Bakersfield before being returned to the prison’s hospital unit.

Because Lanez was convicted in a California state court, Governor Newsom does hold the authority to issue a pardon. However, his office has not released any official statement regarding the case or the growing public petition.

Drake’s support brings added visibility to the campaign, but whether it will sway any legal or political decisions remains uncertain.
