Popular plus-sized Nollywood actress and outspoken body positivity advocate, Monalisa Stephen, has tragically passed away. She reportedly died on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in Lagos due to complications from low blood sugar and internal bleeding, according to a close family member.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed on Wednesday morning by the Chief Executive Officer of Best of Nollywood (BON), Seun Oloketuyi, via his official Instagram page.

“Brand influencer Monalisa Ayobami Stephen is dead. She died yesterday in Lagos after losing the fight against low sugar and internal bleeding. Her immediate younger sister confirmed the death of this hardworking and beautiful soul,” Oloketuyi wrote.

Until her passing, Monalisa was widely known for her bold takes on body image, mental health, and self-love, often sparking intense conversations across social media.

She was also a model, content creator, and media personality, using her platform to openly discuss her personal battles with depression and suicidal thoughts, earning both admiration and criticism.

In March 2023, Monalisa went viral after claiming in an interview that her then-boyfriend performed oral sex on her during her menstrual cycle. The comment drew significant backlash but also highlighted her refusal to conform to societal expectations.

Despite the controversies, she remained a resilient voice for plus-sized women, frequently reminding critics that she was “living her truth.”

As fans reel from the news of her passing, many have pointed to her recent silence on social media as a possible indication that she had been struggling behind the scenes.

While her family has yet to release an official statement, tributes have begun pouring in from fans, admirers, and fellow celebrities who are celebrating her unapologetic legacy.

Monalisa Stephen was more than a name she was a fierce, fearless voice in a world that too often tried to silence her.
