U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he is not pursuing a third term in office, despite previously making light-hearted remarks that sparked speculation.
In an interview aired Sunday, May 4, on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump told moderator Kristen Welker, “This is not something I’m looking to do,” when asked about the possibility of a constitutionally prohibited third term. He added, “I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody ideally a great Republican to carry it forward.”
His clarification follows a series of campaign rallies where Trump’s offhand comments about a third term raised eyebrows. Although the U.S. Constitution firmly restricts presidents to two terms, Trump’s musings have drawn criticism from opponents concerned about democratic norms.
The interview was recorded during Trump’s visit to the University of Alabama, where he addressed graduating students at the Coleman Coliseum ahead of commencement ceremonies.
