Despite his recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, a viral video has emerged showing Labour Party chieftain, Professor Pat Utomi, speaking in glowing terms about the President’s leadership qualities.
Utomi, a prominent political economist and vocal critic of the current administration, had recently announced the formation of a shadow government designed to serve as an alternative to the Tinubu-led Federal Government. He also condemned what he described as the suppression of free speech under Tinubu’s watch, labeling it “an act of cowardice.”
These actions sparked a wave of mixed reactions across the country. The Department of State Services (DSS) subsequently filed a case against him at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing him of attempting to destabilize the nation.
However, the emergence of a resurfaced interview has complicated the narrative. In the video, Utomi praises Tinubu’s foresight and administrative competence, particularly citing his tenure as governor of Lagos State.
“What happened to Lagos was that it got a fellow called Bola Tinubu to be governor in 1999,” Utomi said.
He revealed that Tinubu personally invited him to join his transition team in 1999, assembling experts from various fields to help shape the administration’s vision. Utomi stated he continued to serve as a resource during quarterly cabinet retreats throughout Tinubu’s tenure.
“Everything that is happening in Lagos was planned then. That is why my regard and respect for him are extraordinary,” he said.
Reflecting on Tinubu’s leadership style, Utomi recounted moments of internal conflict during the early days of the Lagos administration, including tensions between Tinubu and his then-deputy. Despite the disagreements, Tinubu reportedly maintained composure and diplomacy.
“At that moment, it struck me that it is the aura of Bola Tinubu that is keeping this place working. That was the day he won my respect,” he noted.
Utomi also commended Tinubu’s talent for identifying capable individuals for public office and his long-term vision for development. According to him, the steady progress in Lagos is a direct result of strategic decisions made during Tinubu’s governorship.
“He had good judgment to pick a successor. Most of us disagreed… but in the end, we saw the wisdom in his choice. So, the gentleman has my respect,” Utomi concluded.
The resurfaced video has prompted fresh debate among observers, with some questioning Utomi’s consistency while others view the remarks as a balanced reflection on leadership, separate from his current political stance.
