U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to impose a 100 percent tariff on movies produced outside the United States, declaring the issue a national security concern.
In a post shared on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, May 4, Trump revealed he had directed Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, to initiate the process of taxing “any and all movies coming into our country that are produced in foreign lands.”
“Other countries are offering all sorts of incentives to lure our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood and other key creative hubs across America are being devastated,” Trump stated.
He further described the trend as “a concerted effort by other nations” and labeled it “a national security threat.” He added, “It is, in addition to everything else, about messaging and propaganda.”
Later on Sunday, while addressing reporters, Trump doubled down on his stance, claiming the U.S. is “making very few movies now.”
“Other nations, a lot of them, have stolen our movie industry,” he said. “If they are not willing to make a movie inside the United States, we should have a tariff on movies that come in.”
However, Trump did not offer details on how the proposed tariff would be implemented particularly in the case of Hollywood productions that involve international locations, co-productions, or global post-production processes.
