Legendary entertainer Barbra Streisand, 83, has reignited public curiosity over her decades-old rumored romance with Warren Beatty, 88, after admitting she’s unsure whether the two ever actually had sex.

In a candid interview with The New Yorker published on June 14, Streisand opened up about her relationship with the Bonnie and Clyde actor a topic she first touched on in her 2023 memoir, My Name Is Barbra.

“I know I slept in the bed with him, but I can’t remember if we actually had penetration,” she told the outlet. “I swear to God, I can’t. There are certain things I block out.”

When pressed further, Streisand moved the conversation along, instead highlighting the enduring nature of their bond:

“But I know we’re still friends. Every year on my birthday, he calls me and we have a wonderful talk about our lives, our children, and so forth.”

Their connection stretches back nearly 70 years they first met at the Clinton Playhouse in Connecticut when Streisand was 16 and Beatty was 21. In her memoir, she described him as “tall with movie-star looks” and noted, “women were already falling at his feet.”

In a 1977 Playboy interview, Streisand had previously referred to Beatty as “one of my flings,” though she later acknowledged the remark was tossed off in a jaded tone.

Despite the uncertainty around the intimacy of their past, Streisand insists they’ve maintained a close, lifelong friendship albeit with some complicated history.

“There’s some water under that bridge,” she noted, recalling a recent conversation where Beatty quipped, “I remember why we broke up.” To which she replied, “When were we together?”

After hanging up, Streisand reflected on their dynamic:

“I kind of remember. I guess I did. Probably once.”

Both stars went on to have lasting marriages. Streisand has been married to James Brolin, 84, since 1998, while Beatty wed Annette Bening, 67, in 1992.

In a recent interview with Today, Brolin offered insight into his and Streisand’s nearly 30-year relationship:

“The best investment we’ve ever made is our mattress… We’re both lazy. We love to sleep late. We do a lot of our work on the phone, on paper, reading, right next to each other.”

While the details of her past with Beatty may remain a mystery, Streisand sums it up simply: a “friendship for life.”
