Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly was reportedly rushed to the hospital after suffering a near-fatal overdose while in solitary confinement at a North Carolina prison, according to new court filings by his attorney.

The 58-year-old, currently serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking and racketeering, allegedly collapsed in his cell on June 13 after being administered what his lawyer described as a dangerously high dose of anxiety medication.

Attorney Beau Brindley claims Kelly had already been given medication upon entering isolation on June 10, but prison staff allegedly administered an additional dose that day, causing a medical emergency. Kelly was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he remained under observation for two days before returning to prison.

“This was no mistake,” Brindley wrote. “It was a dose that jeopardized his life and nearly ended it.”

In an emergency motion filed in court, Brindley is seeking Kelly's immediate release, arguing that his continued incarceration poses a grave threat to his life. The filing also alleges a broader conspiracy involving prison officials who reportedly enlisted a terminally ill member of the Aryan Brotherhood to kill Kelly.

According to the motion, the inmate—Mikeal Glenn Stine—claims in a sworn affidavit that he was previously tasked by prison officials to carry out multiple assaults and was approached in February 2023 to end Kelly’s life. However, after observing the singer for weeks, Stine says he warned Kelly about the plot instead.

“I told him the truth,” Stine said. “I told him I had been sent to kill him. I told him how and by who.”

Brindley argues that Kelly’s current incarceration amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, stating, “Time is now of the essence… Mr. Kelly asks this Court for an extraordinary legal remedy: his release from Bureau of Prisons custody.”
