The political crisis in Rivers State may be nearing resolution following a high-level peace meeting held on Thursday night, June 26, at the State House in Abuja. The meeting, convened by President Bola Tinubu, brought together Minister Nyesom Wike, suspended Governor Sim Fubara, and key members of the State House of Assembly.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Wike announced that peace has been restored, with all parties agreeing to work together in the interest of the state.

“We thank God that peace has finally returned to Rivers. We’ve all agreed to work together with the governor, and he has agreed to work with us. As one political family, we’ve resolved our disagreements and reported our agreement to Mr. President. For me, everything is over. I urge everyone to join us — there is no more acrimony.”

Governor Fubara also expressed optimism about the future of the state:

“What Rivers State needs is peace. By God’s grace, with the help of Mr. President and the support of our leaders, peace has returned.”

President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, due to the prolonged political rift between Fubara and Wike. With this reconciliation, the emergency rule may soon be lifted.
