U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly rebuked French President Emmanuel Macron following Macron’s suggestion that Trump’s early departure from the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, was linked to efforts toward brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, June 16, Trump dismissed Macron’s comments as inaccurate and self-serving.
“Publicity-seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to DC to work on a ‘ceasefire’ between Israel and Iran. Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay tuned!” Trump wrote.
Macron had earlier told reporters at the summit that Trump appeared to be leading diplomatic efforts aimed at halting the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
“There is an offer that has been made, especially to have a ceasefire and to initiate broader discussions,” Macron said. “If the United States of America can achieve a ceasefire, it is a very good thing, and France will support it. We wish for it.”
Trump, however, firmly rejected the claim, stating that his departure was unrelated to the Middle East crisis. He offered no further details, only hinting at a development of greater significance.
The U.S. president left the summit a day early, amid intensifying hostilities between Israel and Iran now in their fifth day of missile exchanges—stoking fears of a broader regional conflict. Prior to his departure, Trump issued a stark warning, advising residents to evacuate Tehran, signaling the heightened severity of the situation and the U.S.'s potential strategic pivot.
The disagreement underscores the ongoing tensions between Trump and Macron, who have previously clashed over issues such as NATO contributions, climate change, and international diplomacy. As concerns over the Israel-Iran conflict grow, speculation mounts over what Trump’s cryptic “much bigger” agenda might involve.
As of press time, the White House had not provided additional clarification.
