The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has denied claims that it advised Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.
The organization also refuted reports alleging that it discouraged northern leaders from supporting Obi’s presidential ambition.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, described the viral reports as false and mischievous, blaming “faceless individuals” for the misinformation.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been alerted to a misleading report circulating on social media alleging that the apex Igbo body warned Mr. Peter Obi against contesting the 2027 presidential election,” the statement read.
“It also claimed that Ohanaeze cautioned the North against backing his candidacy. We categorically state that such a mischievous and misleading statement did not emanate from Ohanaeze.”
Chukwu dismissed the reports as the work of “clandestine, starving street urchins parading a phantom, ludicrous version of Ohanaeze with POS as their address,” emphasizing that the real organization remains focused on justice, equity, and national unity.
He reaffirmed that under the leadership of credible figures such as Senator John Azuta Mbata (President-General), Prince Okey Nwadinobi (Deputy President-General), and Emeka Sibeudu (Secretary-General), Ohanaeze Ndigbo has not taken any political stance on the 2027 elections.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains committed to the progress of the Igbo nation and to Nigeria’s development through justice, fairness, and equity,” he said. “We are non-partisan and have not endorsed any candidate or taken a position on the upcoming presidential election.”
The group urged the media and general public to disregard statements from individuals or groups masquerading as representatives of the organization, warning that such actors are “mercenaries executing the bidding of their political paymasters.”
