Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away in London following a prolonged illness. He died at approximately 4:30 PM on Sunday, July 13.
The news was confirmed in an official statement issued by the family’s spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”
President Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected leader from 2015 to 2023, following an earlier tenure as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985. He was widely recognized for his firm stance on anti-corruption and his commitment to economic reform.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari was the 23rd child of his father in a Fulani household. His life and leadership left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s political history.
In response to the news, the Presidency has issued a statement. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that President Bola Tinubu has spoken with former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, to offer his condolences.
President Tinubu has also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late President’s body back to Nigeria.
In honor of the former leader, President Tinubu has ordered all flags across the nation to be flown at half-staff.
Burial arrangements will be announced by the family in line with Islamic rites.
