Oba Sikiru Adetona.

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, has passed on at the age of 91. The monarch died on Sunday, July 13, 2025 just hours after the reported death of his longtime friend and former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

Ascending the throne on April 2, 1960, Oba Adetona reigned for over 64 years, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigeria’s history. He was widely respected for his courage, intellect, and unwavering commitment to good governance, national unity, and ethical leadership.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona was installed as Awujale at just 26 years old. Over the decades, he transformed Ijebuland into a model of peace, development, and cultural pride. His reign saw remarkable infrastructural expansion, economic growth, and the strengthening of cultural institutions, notably the internationally acclaimed Ojude Oba festival.

A first-class monarch with national and international recognition, Oba Adetona was a fearless advocate for constitutional roles for traditional rulers and a vocal presence during both military regimes and Nigeria’s democratic transitions. In recognition of his contributions, Olabisi Onabanjo University renamed its School of Governance Studies in his honour in 2021—a fitting tribute to his lifelong passion for leadership and education.

Ogun State Governor Mourns

In a statement issued Sunday, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun described the monarch’s death as a “great loss” to the state and the nation at large.

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland,” the governor said.

“Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria in general.

“It is indeed a double tragedy that his passing occurred on the same day as that of former President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Governor Abiodun hailed Oba Adetona as a monarch whose reign ushered in a transformational era, emphasizing his pivotal role in uniting communities, preserving culture, and fostering progress.

“His leadership enhanced the cultural heritage of Ijebuland, with the Ojude Oba festival attaining global status. He was deeply invested in education, healthcare, and economic advancement for his people, making Ijebuland a shining example of community-driven development.”

As tributes pour in from across the country, the people of Ijebuland and Nigeria remember Oba Adetona not just as a traditional ruler, but as a statesman, visionary, and pillar of dignity and strength.

“As we mourn his passing, let us celebrate the extraordinary life of Oba Adetona and honour his contributions to our nation. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of his people will forever be etched in our hearts,” Governor Abiodun concluded.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may we continue to uphold the values he instilled in us during his illustrious reign.”
