The incident, which went viral on social media, shows armed officers invading a corps members’ lodge, accusing the occupants of internet fraud despite clear identification with NYSC uniforms and ID cards. The video captured the officers physically assaulting Ms Elobor, tearing her clothes and leaving her partially unclothed an act that has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice.
Appearing on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’ on Tuesday, the Special Adviser on Community Security to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Ken Emeakayi, described the assault as “unfortunate and unacceptable,” and confirmed that the officers have been taken into custody pending further investigation.
According to Emeakayi, the assault occurred during a joint security operation known as Operation Udo Gatchi, which involved a pursuit of suspected cultists riding motorcycles.
“The operatives were on the trail of some suspected cultists when they pursued them into a residential compound,” he said.
“In the process of searching the houses in line with their mandate, the unfortunate incident involving the corps member occurred.
While they were acting within the law, their conduct in that instance was unacceptable.”
He further explained that the state government responded swiftly after learning of the incident.
“Immediately the incident happened, we arrested the operatives involved and placed them in detention.
Our standard procedure is to first conduct a preliminary investigation, bring in the victims and complainants, and then determine whether the case warrants internal disciplinary measures or criminal prosecution.”
The state government has assured the public that justice will be served and that the rights and dignity of citizens — especially young Nigerians serving under the NYSC — will be protected at all times.
