Actor and comedian Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has criticised the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, over her reaction to the recent airport incident involving Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde, a.k.a. KWAM1.
The controversy began last Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, when KWAM1 was stopped from boarding a ValueJet flight with a flask allegedly containing alcohol. According to the aircraft’s pilot, Captain Ranti Ogoyi, the singer spilled the flask’s contents on her during an attempt to resolve the dispute. The situation escalated when KWAM1 reportedly stood in front of the aircraft to prevent it from taking off without him, risking a dangerous incident on the tarmac.
In the wake of public outrage, KWAM1 issued an apology to President Bola Tinubu, the flight’s captain, his fans, and anyone offended by his actions.
Ms Dabiri-Erewa, a close friend of the singer, shared a video of the apology on social media, captioning it:
“Kwam1’s apology on the airport incident. To err is human.”
Her post drew criticism from many Nigerians, who argued that it downplayed the seriousness of KWAM1’s actions and suggested that an apology was enough to absolve him of wrongdoing.
Joining the criticism, Mr Macaroni took to his X handle to accuse Dabiri-Erewa of promoting a dangerous precedent.
“With that tweet, you have shown you don’t deserve to hold public office. What you’re telling Nigerians is that it’s okay to commit a crime, apologise, and walk away without facing any consequences,” he wrote.
The incident has reignited public debate over accountability, privilege, and the conduct of public officials in Nigeria.
