The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed that members of the Air Peace crew involved in a recent Boeing 737-524 incident in Port Harcourt tested positive for alcohol and cannabis.

The incident occurred on July 13, 2025, at Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State, when the aircraft, with registration 5N-BQQ, landed long after an unstabilised final approach. The jet touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold and only stopped 209 metres into the clearway. All 103 passengers and crew disembarked safely without injuries.

NSIB spokesperson, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, said initial toxicological tests confirmed alcohol consumption among the flight crew, while a cabin crew member tested positive for THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis.

“These results are being reviewed under the human performance and safety management components of the investigation,” she stated.

The Bureau has since issued urgent safety recommendations to Air Peace, including enhanced crew resource management (CRM) training for handling unstabilised approaches and go-around decisions, as well as stricter internal checks to verify crew fitness-for-duty before dispatch.

Oladeji noted that the preliminary report is now available on the NSIB website, while a final report will be released after further analysis.
