American rapper Snoop Dogg has addressed backlash following his comments about LGBTQ+ representation in Disney and Pixar's 2022 animated film Lightyear.
During a recent appearance on the It’s Giving podcast, Snoop said seeing a same-s£x couple in the film made him “scared to go to the movies,” explaining that he was caught off guard when his grandson asked questions about homos£xual relationships.
The remarks quickly drew criticism online, with some accusing the rapper of hom0phobia, while others questioned the podcast’s editing of the segment.
Responding in the comments section of a Hollywood Unlocked Instagram post, Snoop clarified his stance:
“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons. All my g@y friends [know] what’s up — they been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old … teach me how to learn, I’m not perfect.”
On the podcast, Snoop recalled feeling overwhelmed when his grandson asked how a female character in Lightyear had a baby with another woman.
“I didn’t come in for this sh**. I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” he admitted, adding: “These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
Lightyear, a Pixar spinoff voiced by Chris Evans, featured actress Uzo Aduba as space ranger Alisha Hawthorne, who marries her partner Kiko and raises a child in a brief montage. The film also included Disney’s first same-s£x kiss.
