Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has revealed that a painful heartbreak pushed her to get a tattoo.
In an interview with Katy Igwe, the Afrobeats star disclosed that she flew in a tattoo artist from Los Angeles to her Lagos home so she could undergo the process privately and comfortably.
“I flew in my tattoo artist from LA to Nigeria, and I did it in my room,” she said. “When you’re in a tattoo parlour, there are a lot of people around while you’re going through that pain. I wanted to make sure I was in a comfortable space.”
According to Savage, the session was so intense that it left the artist worried.
“He walked in and was like, ‘What are you doing? Is that going to come off?’ When he started tattooing my body, there was blood everywhere. He was more concerned for me, asking, ‘What are you trying to do?’”
The singer explained that the tattoo was her way of coping with heartbreak.
“I did it from the pain I felt. I just wanted to do something to scream,” she said.
Savage added that the past two years were particularly difficult for her due to a toxic relationship.
“The relationship I experienced was crazy. I’m so happy I’m out of it,” she noted.
