Human rights activist and political advocate Omoyele Sowore has reaffirmed that the Court of Appeal ordered the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, back in 2022.

Sowore made the statement during an interview on Arise TV’s “Prime Time” on Monday while addressing the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held earlier in the day in Abuja.

According to him, the peaceful demonstration calling for Kanu’s release was attacked by security operatives, leading to several arrests, including that of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and his brother, along with eleven others.

“We were attacked by the Nigerian police. So, I haven’t done anything wrong in this protest, and we also ended up in the FCT police command,” Sowore said.

He further emphasized that the 2022 Appeal Court ruling ordering Kanu’s release “ought to have taken effect immediately,” but lamented that the Nigerian government has refused to comply with the judgment.

“The Court of Appeal in 2022 asked that Nnamdi Kanu be released. That judgment ought to have taken effect immediately it was given, but the Nigerian government did not honour it,” he stated.
