A joint detachment of defence and security operatives has reportedly opened fire to disperse members of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest movement in the Maitama area of Abuja.

The demonstration, led by activist Omoyele Sowore alongside Barr. Aloy Ejimakor and other supporters, took place near the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) headquarters, where protesters were seen chanting “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now!”

Eyewitnesses reported that the protesters had been warning the police against using tear gas moments before gunshots rang out, causing chaos as participants fled for safety.

As of the time of filing this report, there have been no confirmed casualties, and details remain sketchy. Updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
