Veteran CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour has revealed that the ovarian cancer she previously battled in 2021 has returned.

The 67-year-old anchor, who has been off-air for about a month, shared the news on the Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story podcast, explaining that her cancer has resurfaced in what she described as a “fairly rare” form.

“I have it again, but it’s being very well-managed,” Amanpour said. “This is one of the things people need to understand about some cancers.”

She explained that her latest diagnosis is “stage 1/2,” meaning the cancer is still in its early stage but has adhered to her pelvis. Despite the setback, Amanpour remains positive and urged women to pay attention to their bodies.

“I wanted to say listen to your body because part of the reason I got such quick care was because I listened to my body and went straight to the doctors,” she emphasized.

Joined on the podcast by gynaecological oncology consultant Dr. Angela George, Amanpour said she felt “lucky” to have noticed symptoms early, noting that ovarian cancer often goes undetected until it’s too late.

Amanpour first disclosed her cancer diagnosis in 2021, revealing that she underwent major surgery followed by several months of chemotherapy. At the time, she said she was confident about her long-term recovery.

“I’ve had successful major surgery to remove it and I’m now undergoing several months of chemotherapy for the very best possible long-term prognosis,” she said then.

Amanpour, who has been with CNN since 1983 and serves as the network’s chief international anchor, also used her platform to advocate for awareness and early detection.

“I’m telling you this in the interest of transparency, but really as a shoutout to early diagnosis,” she said. “Women need to educate themselves, get regular screenings, and ensure their medical concerns are taken seriously.”

The celebrated journalist continues to inspire millions around the world—not just through her fearless reporting, but through her courage and openness about her health journey.
