Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has described Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), as the only active and genuine opposition voice currently left in Nigeria’s political space.

Fayose made the remark on Wednesday during an interview on Politics Today, a political programme on Channels Television.

The former governor, known for his outspoken nature, stated that while several political figures still attempt to position themselves as opposition leaders, Obi remains the only one with real influence and traction among Nigerians.

“Tell me, who will defeat the APC? The only opposition that I know of in Nigeria — let me tell you now — the only opposition, I didn’t say the opposition can win Asiwaju, but the only opposition that still has traction is Obi, no other one,” Fayose said.

He continued, “The only voice that has traction, that is still talking, that is everywhere despite not being in government, is Obi. I give it to him. But let me tell you, all others are just filling the gap. Atiku is filling the gap, and all the others too, because people don’t listen to them anymore.”

Fayose, however, maintained that no individual or political group currently stands a realistic chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

The former governor’s statement adds to growing conversations around Nigeria’s political opposition, particularly as parties begin to reposition ahead of the next general election.
