Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs faces sentencing Friday in a New York federal court after being convicted on two prostitution-related counts, each carrying up to 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors are urging Judge Arun Subramanian to impose at least 11 years, calling Combs “unrepentant” and a danger to the public. His defense team, meanwhile, is asking for 14 months effectively time served arguing that his career and reputation are already destroyed.
Jurors in July acquitted Combs of the most serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, which could have led to life imprisonment. But testimony from victims, including singer Cassie (Casandra Ventura), painted a harrowing picture of abuse, coercion, and so-called “freak-offs” that Combs allegedly directed and filmed.
In a letter to the court, Ventura urged the judge to recognize the courage of victims, recalling how jurors watched video footage of Combs physically assaulting her in 2016. She said she has been left with lasting trauma and has fled New York with her family out of fear of retaliation.
Combs himself has submitted an apology, admitting to violence and saying prison has left him “humbled and broken to my core.” He is expected to address the court directly before sentencing.
The ruling will weigh victim impact statements, character references, federal sentencing guidelines, and Combs’s plea for leniency. Regardless of today’s outcome, speculation lingers about the possibility of a presidential pardon, with reports that figures close to Combs have reached out to the White House.
