Michael Jackson may be remembered as the “King of Pop,” but according to longtime friend Lionel Richie, he also carried a far less glamorous nickname: “Smelly.”
In his new memoir Truly, released Tuesday, September 30, Richie reveals that the playful moniker was coined by producer Quincy Jones, who often teased Jackson for going days without changing clothes or showering. Jackson, Richie writes, took the joke in stride, laughing along even when unaware of the issue.
Richie explains that Jackson’s relentless touring schedule complicated basic routines like laundry. Dry cleaners would sometimes pocket his outfits as souvenirs, while his global fame made a simple shopping trip nearly impossible. As a result, Jackson often wore the same pants repeatedly until they were worn out.
The “All Night Long” singer also recalls the pop star’s laid-back and sometimes unkempt — style during casual visits: jeans and a t-shirt that were either too loose, too short, or, as Richie admits, “smelly.” On one occasion, Richie even had to sneak Jackson into his home so he could shower and slip into fresh clothes.
Still, Richie makes clear that Jackson’s personal quirks never diminished his unmatched artistry. “Everyone has their quirks,” he writes, even legends.
