Tensions flared between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a private phone call on Friday, as the two leaders discussed Hamas’s conditional acceptance of the latest Gaza peace proposal.
According to a report by Axios, Trump phoned Netanyahu to share what he considered “good news” — Hamas’s partial agreement to the US-backed plan but the Israeli leader dismissed the development, saying there was “nothing to celebrate.”
Citing a US official familiar with the call, Axios reported that Trump snapped back:
“I don’t know why you’re always so f***ing negative. This is a win. Take it.”
Netanyahu reportedly viewed Hamas’s response as a rejection and wanted both governments to release a joint statement clarifying that position. Trump, however, saw the partial acceptance as a breakthrough opportunity, believing it could lead to a deal to end the nearly two-year conflict.
The heated exchange highlights Trump’s growing impatience with Israel’s reluctance to embrace his proposed peace framework. Following the call, Trump publicly urged Israel to halt airstrikes in Gaza a move Netanyahu reportedly complied with within hours.
In an interview with Axios, Trump confirmed the conversation, saying:
“I told Bibi this was his chance for victory. He was fine with it — he’s got to be fine with it. With me, you’ve got to be fine.”
Delegations from the United States, Israel, and Hamas are scheduled to begin indirect talks in Egypt on Monday, with mediators from Egypt and Qatar facilitating discussions. The negotiations are expected to focus on setting a temporary truce date and finalizing the first phase of the plan — the release of 47 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian detainees.
On Sunday, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that talks with Hamas and regional allies had been “very positive.”
“I am told that the first phase should be completed this week, and I am asking everyone to MOVE FAST,”
