The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that it worked in collaboration with the United States to carry out military airstrikes targeting ISIS terrorists in the country’s North West region.
In a statement released on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said the operation was the result of sustained intelligence sharing and strategic coordination with international partners.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirms that Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism. This cooperation has led to precision airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria’s North West,” the statement said.
It added that the partnership aligns with international best practices and bilateral agreements, involving intelligence exchange, strategic coordination, and other lawful forms of support carried out with respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and shared global security objectives.
The ministry reaffirmed that Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts prioritize civilian protection, national unity, and the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.
“Terrorism in any form, directed against any community, is an affront to Nigeria’s values and a threat to international peace and security,” the statement noted.
It further stated that the Federal Government will continue to work closely with its partners through established diplomatic and security channels to weaken terrorist networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, prevent cross-border threats, and strengthen Nigeria’s security and intelligence capabilities.
The ministry said it would keep engaging relevant partners and updating the public through official channels.
The confirmation follows remarks by US President Donald Trump on Thursday, in which he announced directing the Department of War to carry out what he described as unprecedented and deadly strikes against ISIS terrorists responsible for killing innocent Christians in Nigeria.
