A Nigerian lawyer based in the UK, Bolanle Cole, has claimed that the ongoing “japa” wave is quietly wrecking many Nigerian marriages abroad.

Cole shared his concerns on X after news broke that a Nigerian cleric and his wife had separated, three years after relocating to the UK.

According to him, the couple had been married for 11 years in Nigeria and had three children before moving abroad. Yet within just three years overseas, their relationship collapsed.

He questioned how a long-standing marriage could fall apart so quickly and wondered what exactly in the UK environment is contributing to the breakdown of Nigerian homes.
