With this reopening, the number of American Centres and Spaces across Nigeria has now grown to 29, creating more access points for Nigerians to connect with U.S. education, culture, and professional development opportunities.
The upgraded centre, located inside the U.S. Embassy Chancery, now features modern facilities and advanced technology designed to serve Nigerians of all ages. It offers access to U.S. information resources, English language learning tools, educational advising for students interested in studying in America, cultural programmes, professional skills training, and networking opportunities with U.S. exchange programme alumni.
Speaking at the reopening ceremony, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., described the American Centre as an important platform for learning, collaboration, and opportunity.
“Today, we are proud to reopen the American Centre as a space that celebrates American excellence in the arts and reflects the values that define our nation. These centres have become trusted spaces for young people who want to learn about the United States, improve their English, and build professional skills,” he said.
According to the ambassador, the centre is designed to be a welcoming environment where students, entrepreneurs, and community leaders can meet, share ideas, and create new opportunities.
“Through educational advising, entrepreneurship training, and digital literacy programmes, American Spaces equip Nigerians with the tools they need to succeed in today’s fast-changing global economy,” Mills added.
He also spoke about the artworks featured in the centre, noting that the murals reflect values such as hard work, determination, and perseverance.
“These are values that define American achievement, but they are also qualities we see every day in Nigerian youth,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Country Public Diplomacy Counsellor, Lee McManis, expressed excitement over the reopening and described the centre as a hub for innovation and learning.
“We are thrilled to reopen the American Centre here at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja. This revitalised space joins 29 other American Spaces across Nigeria, serving as vibrant centres for celebrating U.S. leadership in innovation and education,” he said.
McManis explained that the centre is equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to encourage meaningful connections and support knowledge sharing between Nigerians and Americans.
“American Spaces are at the heart of our commitment to building bridges. These centres provide welcoming environments where people can access reliable information, develop new skills, and engage in open dialogue,” he added.
The redesigned centre also features a series of large murals created by professional artists. The artworks celebrate American history, culture, and shared values, highlighting themes such as freedom, innovation, and community through bold and symbolic imagery.
The American Centre is expected to play a key role in empowering young Nigerians, promoting lifelong learning, and strengthening the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United States.
