A student opened fire on two classmates at Evergreen High School in suburban Denver on Wednesday, September 10, before shooting himself. Authorities confirmed the suspect later died from his injuries.
The shooting, reported around 12:30 p.m., took place both inside and outside the school building in Evergreen, Colorado, about 30 miles west of Denver in the Rocky Mountain foothills.
Responding officers located the shooter within five minutes, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley. No officers discharged their weapons during the incident. More than 100 law enforcement personnel from surrounding agencies rushed to the school.
The two victims were initially listed in critical condition at St. Anthony Hospital, said hospital CEO Kevin Cullinan. By early evening, one had been upgraded to stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, according to trauma director Dr. Brian Blackwood. The students’ ages have not been released.
After the shooting, parents gathered outside a nearby elementary school to reunite with their children. Eighteen students who fled the campus sought refuge at a nearby home, where resident Don Cygan, a retired educator, sheltered them. Cygan said he recorded their names and those of the parents who later picked them up, while his wife, a retired nurse, provided comfort and treated some students for shock.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident as the community reels from yet another episode of school violence.

Much as I empathize with Charlie's family, it seems like America needs to implode for there to be a semblance of peace across the world
